World Mosquito Day – 20 August 2025
Annually, August 20th, we commemorate World Mosquito Day, marking Sir Ronald Ross’s 1897 discovery that female mosquito’s transmit malaria. This day is a vital reminder of the ongoing fight against mosquito-borne diseases, particularly malaria, which continues to claim over 620,000 lives annually, the majority being children in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Did you know? Only female mosquito’s bite. They need a meal of blood to develop their eggs, and they’re drawn to us by the carbon dioxide we exhale, body heat, skin bacteria, and even the lactic acid in our sweat. Female mosquito’s beat their wings up to 500 times per second, creating the high-pitched buzz we all know too well, a sound designed to attract males for mating. Once they’ve fed, their saliva (which prevents clotting) is what causes the swelling and itchiness we experience.
World Mosquito Day reinforces that prevention saves lives. The use of mosquito nets, combined with awareness campaigns and medical interventions, remains one of the most effective defences in reducing malaria transmission, a mission we proudly support.
At Kiwinet Mosquito Nets, we go beyond crafting bespoke, premium mosquito nets for guest lodges. We also supply a Basic, simpler Range tailored for safari lodge staff accommodation, ensuring that the same standard of safety and comfort extends beyond guest rooms. This dual focus allows lodges to protect every individual under their care—guests and staff alike—helping to safeguard health, improve wellbeing, and strengthen the overall sustainability of Africa’s tourism and hospitality ecosystem.
We invite our clients to continue advocating for malaria prevention, whether by educating guests, supporting anti-malaria initiatives, or prioritising protective measures in your establishments.
Together, let’s honour this day by reinforcing our shared mission:
To provide safe, sleep sanctuaries that protect & preserve life in Africa and beyond.
If you can dream it, Kiwinet can create it.
